MUNICIPALITIES

You can travel by boat, bicycle, motorcycle, car or bus in the archipelago. Whatever you mode of transport, the archipelago offers good connections.

If traveling by car, you can get to Nagu, Korpo and Houtskär on the large ferries. You can get to Rosala, in Hitis, and Iniö on ferries which can transport as many as 50 cars at a time. There are also ferry services between other island municipalities. Not all ferries accept cars for transportation, but in that case, just park your car on the shore and enjoy a day at sea!

If you are travelling without a car, you will find in easy to get about in the archipelago using the ferries or chartered boats and boat taxis.

Boats are a pleasant way of getting around in the archipelago. Visitors with their own boat can plan their own itinerary and stop at the various visitors' marinas along their route.

The archipelago is a veritable Mecca for people with boats.

The road network is comprehensive, and where the roads end, bridges and ferries allow you to continue your journey. Nowadays, you can get to the larger island communities by bus. Two-wheeled vehicles are one of the best modes of transportation when you are travelling through the archipelago over-land. An increasing number of cyclists and motorcyclists have become aware of the excellent opportunities that the archipelago offers for pleasure. Seated on the saddle of a bicycle of motorcycle, you can experience the archipelago close to the nature. The majority of ferries take bicycles and motorcycles, even if they don't take cars.

The Archipelago Ring Route passes through a number of municipalities of the archipelago and its neighbourhood. The ring route is about 200 kilometres long, and includes eight ferries and twelve bridges in some ten municipalities and towns along the route. Make sure that you set aside plenty of time for your trip so that you can see and experience as much as possible.

Stay for a longer period and see the attractions, visit village shops and spend the night in comfortable accommodation. Take the opportunity while you are here to visit our sights and attractions. The area is dotted with island churches and chapels, and you will find a museum and art exhibition in every municipality. Various events that you may be interested in are arranged during the summer season in many localities. These include local markets and dances.

One of the major events of the archipelago and its neighbouring areas is the "Night of Ancient Fires," which is organised in all the municipalities of the archipelago on the last Saturday in August. Seen from the sea, the coastline seems to be an unbroken chain of bonfires, and high in the sky fireworks explode in a blaze of glory - an experience that shouldn't be missed!
