VILLNÄS
- ASKAINEN The municipality of Askainen is situated partially on the main land and partially on islands about 30 km from Turku. In the middle of splendid green country, with the touch of the fresh sea. Askainen has plenty of shore line. The swimming beach on Pikisaari, the Livonsaari day, the smoked fish market and the widely known cucumber fair are some examples of wide ranging events for the tourist. History is strongly present in Askainen. Finland's Marshal C.G.E. Mannerheim was born in the Louhisaari Castle, which was built by the Finnish nobleman Herman Fleming in 1655. The castle is representative in Finland of the rare palace type of architecture. The same Fleming built the grey stone church in Askainen. The old country houses in the area breath the elegance of days gone by.
